Green Heron
I had been watching this immature Green Heron from a berm 25 feet away. At one point it was on the right end of the log preening, seemingly obvious to its surroundings. In one quick movement it stopped preening to stab its bill into the water and came back up with this bullfrog tadpole. It carried the tadpole down to the lower end of the log and used the log to help push the tadpole off its bill and into its mouth. Brick Pond 2015

This behavior is fleeting as the drakes will soon molt and disappear into the reeds, staying hidden as they lose flight feathers in preparation for eclipse plumage.

My first good look at a Wood Duck. I had eased behind a tree covered by a borrowed camouflage cloth. With my lens peeking out through a hole in the fabric I stood just to the left of the tree. All I had was a 100-400mm zoom lens and this was when I realized I was going to need a bigger lens.

I had been watching this immature Green Heron from a berm 25 feet away. At one point it was on the right end of the log preening, seemingly obvious to its surroundings. In one quick movement it stopped preening to stab its bill into the water and came back up with this bullfrog tadpole. It carried the tadpole down to the lower end of the log and used the log to help push the tadpole off its bill and into its mouth. Brick Pond 2015

My first good look at a Wood Duck. I had eased behind a tree covered by a borrowed camouflage cloth. With my lens peeking out through a hole in the fabric I stood just to the left of the tree. All I had was a 100-400mm zoom lens and this was when I realized I was going to need a bigger lens.

A young Wood Duck flaps its tiny wings to clear excess water after bathing. The dark spot on its cheek is an easy indicator that this duckling is about 25-30 days old. It will still be a few weeks before the wings fully develop and this duck takes flight. Brick Pond 2015
