In September 2011 a devastating flood wreaked havoc on the town of Owego, NY. During those few days a concerned citizen found a young snapping turtle, since named Chomper, who had been stranded. He was brought to Waterman Conservation Education Center which became his temporary home. In December 2017, high school senior and licensed rehabilitator, Anna Llewellyn, volunteered to care for Chomper in her home. Her plan was to release him this spring when the weather warmed up. With a life expectancy of maybe 50 years, Chomper has a long life ahead of him. He needed to go home. This morning, Chomper joined his native pond. It took some goading, but once he understood what was happening he swam toward freedom with obvious joy. So long Chomper, I hope you live a long and prosperous life at Brick Pond. May 6, 2018
